The Boomerang Effect: How Declining Institutions Have Triggered New Threats to Democracy.

The talk of Prof. Ziblatt will contend with the paradox that he calls the "boomerang effect": that pushes towards more inclusiveness and openness often trigger political movements advocating political exclusion. With a focus on contemporary Europe and North America, Prof. Ziblatt in his talk explores these dynamics and he reflects on how democracies can cope with the rise of illiberal movements within their own midst that assault democracy.
